What is "pot burn noodles"? It's a noodle soup cooked in a pot with deep-fried noodles and all kinds other goodies. Everyone makes it with different goodies, different flavored broths. But having had these noodles outside of Tainan, I knew I had to come back for the real thing! My friend Emily thinks I prefer everything Tainan because of my nostalgia for my home, but, come on, food in Tainan is objectively better. Many Taiwanese people from other cities would take a day trip to Tainan just to eat! Anyway, the two places I recommend highly are some of my childhood favorites (so long ago):
Xiǎo Dòudòu's big bowl of noodles is packed with goodies
小豆豆 (Xiǎo Dòudòu) is directly across the street from 南門公園 (Nánmén Gōngyuán). The interior looks exactly the way it did 30 years ago. The owner and his wife look more or less the same, too. And that bowl of noodles did not change at all in taste. When my kids ordered their noodles, the sigh they gave. It's as if I never fed them anything good!
Other than noodles, they also have 滷味 (lǔwèi) - stewed snacks, fruit platters, ice... We made sure to order as much as we could eat. So satisfying~
Stewed goodies uniquely flavored iced tea
Strawberry ice
新迦拿 (xīn jiāná) is practically next door to my old house in Tainan. I was not sure if it were the same shop since rumor had it that they closed years ago. Anyway, when I walked in, that familiar smell brought me back to my childhood. When I looked around, I saw this picture of an angel (I know, quite a story) and remembered looking at it every time I ate here. When I told the owner that I knew that picture from when I was little. She said she's had that picture since she was little, but she's old now yet I'm still young.
Their noodles have a fried fish cake on top
Their broth is very old-school tasting, with a lot of seaweed and bonito. There is not as much "goodies" in the soup, but it's clean and comforting all the same. For those who want to try something else, they also have fantastic udon noodles and fried bread. You can't go wrong here!
Both these places are old school pot burn noodle shops, so be sure to miss the peak meal times if you don't want to wait a long time for a table.
