Taipei's #1 Breakfast

Transcript of MGY 30 - Taipei's #1 Breakfast

Hello friends, here we are in the center of Taipei

We are here to meet up with our very good friend, Gracie

For Taipei’s best breakfast

Fuhang Doujiang, Fuhang Soy Milk in Huashan Market

is “the” most famous soy milk restaurant in Taipei

If you come here during the mornings, you may have to wait in line for up to 2 hours!

My tip for you - Come here at noon on a weekday, when people are switching over to lunch

That way you may only have to wait for 15, 20 minutes

Gracie should be getting here anytime now!

Soy Milk restaurant is a type of breakfast restaurants in Taiwan

that serve not only soy milk but also all types of traditional breakfast items

Their signature item is a thick bread baked in this special oven,

where you stick the dough onto the sides of the oven

so the outside is nice and crispy once the bread is cooked through

We ordered a lot of different things today

Caramel pastry is actually baked in their special oven and inside is caramel sugar

And this, Danbing, is an egg crepe

What makes their savory soy milk really good is that

Other than the usual, the scallion, the youtiao, which is super crispy cruller,

they have xiāmǐ in it.  Xiāmǐ is little bits of shrimp

So this is our salty soy milk here, whereas here we have the sweet soy milk

It’s more of a drink

One last thing

Hòubǐng jiádàn, thick pastry with egg

So I do love soy milk.  I drank it everyday during quarantine

Everyday!

Yeah, I UberEats a large tub of it and I had it every single day

Did you have this in quarantine too?

No, well, actually they sent it to us, but it didn’t look like this

Caramel sugar, totally melted, ready to try it?

So there’s crunch, sesame adds a little bit of savory

Super good

After that huge huge breakfast, we decided to go do some shopping

Huashan, here we come!

There are a lot of pop-up markets all over Taipei.  This one is just outside of Huashan 1914

Where they sell a lot of hand-made artisanal things

If you haven’t seen our video on this unique park, be sure to check it out!

Now with our new hats, yay girls, new hats, we are ready to take a walk through Bopiliao.

Bopiliao is a historical block in Taipei’s oldest neighborhood, Wanhua.

If you haven’t seen our video about Wanhua, check that out, too!

Today, we are visiting the Local History Museum at Bopiliao.

While it was fun to visit with the girls, I loved coming here with my mom last month,

who was so excited to see the exhibit on school life from when she was a girl

I am feeling totally exhausted from touring

It’s a hard job

Now we are at Herb Alley for a little snack of shāo xiāncǎo, which is “hot herbs”

It’s an herbal tea with stuff in it

If you leave it long enough it’s going to congeal

Refreshing, right?

Herbal, taste like medicine, it’s healthy

Explain this to me mama

After a day of touring we somehow brought ourselves to Longshan Temple

the oldest and biggest temple in Taipei

We are going to sign off now.

Bye-bye
Happy Lantern Festival!
